Winchell Competes in World Championship Golf Tourney
by Josie Mullins, Newport Voice
Newport may boast the next Tiger Woods in 6-year-old Hayden Winchell. Hayden says his dad, Dan, got him started playing golf and now he plays a lot. During the summer he can be found at the Golf Farm or on a golf course honing his skills. "He has a lot of natural ability," says Winchell's coach, Nina Foust. "You just want to guide him so his grip and posture doesn't get off. What we really need to work on now is his short game. That's what really hurt him at Pinehurst." Hayden was sick during the tournament with an ear infection but the up and coming star fought his way through to land him a world ranking. Hayden played nine holes a day with two other competitors. In his age group there were 84 kids competing and all together 35 countries were represented. The U.S. Kids Golf World Championship enjoyed its seventh year of competition this year and had more than 950 international children, ages 4-12, compete. This is the largest golf tournament for children ages 4-12.
